Tyre, Archaeological site and ancient city in southern Lebanon

The coastal site of Tyre encompasses two harbors, extensive Roman ruins, and a causeway that connects the former island to the mainland.

Alexander the Great transformed Tyre from an island into a peninsula in 332 BCE by constructing a causeway during his seven-month military siege.

Tyre developed the production of purple dye from Murex sea snails, which became a symbol of power throughout the Mediterranean region.

The archaeological complex includes a Roman hippodrome, Byzantine streets with mosaics, Phoenician springs, and a Crusader-era cathedral.

Excavations at Tyre revealed remains from five civilizations: Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Crusader periods.
