Nagadeepa Purana Viharaya, Buddhist temple on Nainativu island, Jaffna District, Sri Lanka

Nagadeepa Purana Viharaya is a Buddhist temple on Nainativu island consisting of several buildings surrounded by water. The complex displays traditional Sri Lankan architecture with main and secondary structures that house and display sacred Buddhist relics.

In the third century BCE, King Devanampiya Tissa ordered the reconstruction of the site, establishing it as one of Sri Lanka's principal Buddhist locations. This early royal support shaped its long history as a center of Buddhist worship.

The temple draws thousands of pilgrims throughout the year who gather here to participate in religious ceremonies and prayer. The community shares a deep connection to this sacred place, which serves as a central hub of faith and spiritual practice.

Visitors reach the island by ferry from Kurikadduwan Jetty, with boats operating regularly during daylight. It is best to check weather conditions beforehand and wear comfortable walking shoes, as reaching the temple requires walking after arrival.

According to local legend, Buddha himself mediated at this site between two Naga kings fighting over a precious throne, bringing them peace. This story remains alive in local tradition today and gives the temple special spiritual significance.
