Delft National Park, National park on Neduntivu island, Northern Province, Sri Lanka
Delft National Park on Neduntivu island covers flat terrain with coral beaches, shallow waters, and semi-arid tropical vegetation dominated by palmyrah trees and dry shrubs. The landscape blends sandy shores with sparse plant life adapted to dry conditions.
Portuguese traders introduced ponies to the island in the 16th century, establishing a wild population that survives to this day. This distinctive herd represents one of the most enduring legacies of early European contact.
Colonial-era structures from Portuguese and Dutch traders still stand in the landscape today. A temple from the Chola Dynasty sits on the western shore, marking centuries of spiritual importance to the region.
Navy-operated boats depart from Kurikattuwan Naval Jetty for the one-hour journey across open water to reach the island. Check boat schedules in advance and prepare for sea conditions during your visit.
The park provides habitat for eleven mammal species, one amphibian, and eight reptile species found in limited numbers across the region. Migratory birds stop here seasonally during their long-distance journeys.
