Nallur Kandaswamy Devasthanam, Hindu temple in Nallur, Sri Lanka
Nallur Kandaswamy Devasthanam is a Hindu temple in Nallur in the Jaffna District of Sri Lanka. The complex displays towers with carved reliefs and columns dominated by red and white colors and covers a large area with several buildings.
The origins of this place reach back to the 18th century when it was rebuilt after earlier destruction. Parts of the original stones were used by the Portuguese for their fortifications before the community resumed construction.
The name Nallur comes from a former kingdom and recalls the Tamil-administered region in the past. Worshipers come here to pray together and join public rituals that shape the social life of the community.
Before entering you must remove your shoes and wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Ceremonies take place at specific times between early morning and evening with the busiest moments occurring during festival periods.
Inside daily rituals are performed dedicated to waking the deity in the morning and putting it to rest in the evening. These ceremonies follow strict rules preserved for generations.
