Neelagiriseya

Neelagiriseya is a large Buddhist temple complex located within a forest reserve that encompasses an extensive area with multiple structures. The central stupa serves as the main focal point and is surrounded by other buildings, boundary walls, and ponds that define the site.

This sanctuary was founded more than 2000 years ago and developed into an important religious center in the region. While the exact dating remains debated, archaeological evidence suggests it was expanded and used during several historical periods.

The name refers to the blue mountains visible in the distance that hold special meaning for the place. Visitors can see the offerings and flowers that pilgrims leave at the stupa, showing how actively people honor this site today.

The site is situated within a forest area and is most easily reached during drier months when paths are not muddy. Sturdy footwear is advisable since the ground can be uneven and partially overgrown.

Excavations uncovered an ancient casket containing Buddha relics that bore inscriptions confirming their authenticity. This discovery provides insight into the religious practices and reverence that pilgrims held for this location in ancient times.
