Neelagiriseya, Buddhist temple in Lahugala, Sri Lanka
The largest Buddhist stupa in the Eastern Province features a circumference of 182 meters and rises to a height of 22 meters.
The temple construction dates back to the 3rd century BC under King Kawantissa or between 20 BC and 9 AC during King Bhatikabaya's reign.
Archaeological excavations in 2011 revealed inscriptions documenting donations from Queen Chula Sivalee and potentially Kings Jettatissa I or II.
The temple complex spans 36 hectares and includes ancient building remains, boundary walls, and ponds within the Lahugala Forest Reserve.
A golden casket containing Buddha relics was discovered inside the stupa, accompanied by inscriptions confirming their authenticity.
