Alumnat, Renaissance seminary building in Old Town, Vilnius, Lithuania.
The Alumnat is a Renaissance building in the Old Town organized around a courtyard with Italian arcades. The structure shows how Italian architectural forms were adapted north of the Alps.
It was founded in 1582 as a training center for religious conversion under Pope Gregory XIII. The building in its present form took shape around 1622, incorporating earlier Gothic structures into the new design.
The building's courtyard displays how Italian arcades blend with local Baltic construction methods. Visitors can still see today how this mix of southern and northern elements shapes the place.
The building is near the Presidential Palace and easy to reach via Universiteto Street. Visitors should know that the Old Town is hilly and the site slopes gently downward.
The earlier Gothic parts are still visible in the lower sections of the structure, showing how Renaissance builders worked on existing ground. This makes it a rare example of different architectural periods layered in one place.
