Panevėžys Cathedral, Baroque revival cathedral in Panevėžys, Lithuania
Panevėžys Cathedral is a Baroque revival religious building with a rectangular tower topped by a prominent dome. Inside, three naves are divided by columns, and carved oak doors decorated with relief work frame the entrances.
Plans for the building emerged in the 1860s under Bishop Motiejus Valančius, but actual construction did not begin until the early 1900s. Work continued for three decades before the structure was finally completed in 1933.
The walls display paintings of ten deanery churches from the Diocese of Panevėžys, showing its role as the mother church of the region. These depictions connect the cathedral to smaller communities in its surrounding area.
The cathedral is an accessible building where visitors can view the interior layout and explore the decorated spaces. Remember that this is an active place of worship, so respectful behavior and dress are appropriate during your visit.
The interior holds a notable organ from Königsberg crafted by Bruno Goebel and installed in 1931, which still produces music today. This instrument is paired with four bells, including one dedicated to Christ the King, creating a rare musical assembly from that era.
