Church of St. Raphael in Vilnius, Baroque church in Vilnius, Lithuania
The Church of St. Raphael is a brick Baroque church on the bank of the Neris River in Vilnius. It has two matching towers and a facade with ornate details along its cornices and walls.
The church was completed in 1702 and built for a Jesuit community that used it as their monastery church. After the suppression of the Jesuit order, the building was turned into a military warehouse before returning to religious use.
Above the high altar hangs a painting of the Archangel Raphael, to whom the church is dedicated. A side chapel holds a statue of Christ carrying the Cross, which draws the attention of many visitors who come to pray.
The church sits right on the Neris riverbank and is easy to reach on foot from the old town. Visiting during the day gives you the best light to see the details of the facade and the interior.
Near the church stands a small shrine built during a plague that hit the city during the Great Northern War. It is easy to walk past without noticing, but it marks one of the hardest moments in the city's past.
