Church of St. Catherine, Late Baroque church in Old Town, Vilnius, Lithuania.
The Church of St. Catherine is a Baroque structure in Vilnius's Old Town built entirely of brick, featuring two towers, a single nave with a narrower presbytery, and a semi-circular apse. The interior accommodates approximately 400 people and now serves as an event venue.
Jan Karol Chodkiewicz, a military leader of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, commissioned this building in 1618 as a Benedictine convent, with construction completed by 1632. The structure changed purposes several times over the centuries before becoming a cultural venue.
The interior now functions as a concert venue with 396 seats, hosting classical music performances, theatrical productions, and poetry readings throughout the year. This repurposing shows how the space continues to bring people together, just in a different way than its original religious purpose.
The building is located at Vilniaus Street 30 in Vilnius, where you can find an administration office that provides information and occasionally arranges visits. Check ahead to see what events are scheduled, as this affects the availability of tours.
Following its restoration in 2006, this structure became the first religious building in Vilnius to undergo complete renewal after Lithuania regained independence. The renovation marked a turning point in how the city began preserving its religious heritage.
