Green Bridge, Steel road bridge in central Vilnius, Lithuania
The Green Bridge extends 102.9 meters across the Neris River, connecting the city center of Vilnius with the Šnipiškės district through its 24-meter wide steel structure.
The original bridge from 1536 included apartments for toll collectors and received privileges from Grand Duke Sigismund the Old to prevent other bridge constructions across the Neris.
The bridge received its name in 1739 when a wooden version was painted green, establishing a designation that remained through multiple reconstructions and political changes.
The bridge functions as a central transportation route in Vilnius, providing continuous vehicle access between opposite sides of the Neris River throughout all hours.
In 1673, Italian architect Giovanni Battista Frediani attempted to construct an innovative single-arch wooden bridge spanning 73 meters, which collapsed shortly after completion.
