Pūčkoriai outcrop, Geological monument in Pavilniai Regional Park, Lithuania
The Pūčkoriai outcrop is a geological formation along the Vilnia River that displays layers of glacial deposits including loam, gravel, sand, and clay. The exposed slope shows distinct horizontal sections that allow visitors to observe how erosion and ancient ice age processes have shaped the landscape.
This site received protected status as a natural monument in 1974. The location also contains remains of a 17th-century workshop where the river's power was harnessed for manufacturing weapons.
Scientists B. Rydzewski and L. Micas conducted extensive research at the outcrop, identifying significant Jurassic period fossils including belemnites and ammonites.
The site sits within Pavilniai Regional Park and offers good viewing conditions from a hiking trail that runs alongside the river. The steep slope provides clear access to observe erosion patterns and layered deposits throughout the seasons.
The continuous erosion at the upper edge of the formation means the outcrop changes appearance over time, creating a natural laboratory for watching active geological change. The adjoining pine forest is gradually affected by these ongoing processes.
