Sapieha Palace, Baroque palace in Antakalnis district, Vilnius, Lithuania
Sapieha Palace is a Baroque building in the Antakalnis district featuring elaborate decorative elements, including frescoes and architectural details from the 17th century. The ground floor is open to the public and displays the splendor of the former interior spaces.
The building was created as a residence for the noble Sapieha family in the late 17th century. In 1809, the Russian government acquired it and later used it as a military hospital.
The Contemporary Art Centre uses the palace today as a venue for exhibitions and cultural events that connect old architecture with contemporary artistic work. Visitors can see how historical rooms are adapted for new creative projects.
Visiting is best planned in advance since opening times vary based on current exhibitions and events. The building is located in the quiet Antakalnis neighborhood and is easy to reach on foot.
The building is the last surviving residence of the Sapieha family in the city and is now animated by a contemporary art center. A surviving Baroque park with restored gates surrounds the grounds and still displays the formal garden design of the 17th century.
