Vištytis Stone

Visztytis Stone is a massive glacial boulder located near Visztytis in southwestern Lithuania, stretching about 7 meters long and rising 4 meters high. A natural hollow at its top collects rainwater and makes it easy to recognize among the other rock formations in the landscape.

The stone arrived at its current location thousands of years ago during the last ice age, when glacial movements shaped the Lithuanian landscape. These ancient glacial forces left behind many such boulders scattered across the region.

Locals share a story about a devil who tried to carry this boulder to destroy the church but dropped it when a rooster crowed at midnight. The tale shapes how visitors experience the place and gives it a memorable character.

The boulder is straightforward to locate and stands out among other rocks due to its distinctive features. Visit when visibility is good so you can see the details and the water-filled hollow at the top clearly.

This boulder ranks among the ten largest glacial erratrics in Lithuania and bears markings that local tales attribute to the devil's footprint. These distinctive scratches and grooves catch the eye of anyone who examines the stone.
