Differdange Castle, Renaissance château in Differdange, Luxembourg
Differdange Castle sits on a hilltop in central Differdange with three buildings arranged around a square courtyard with octagonal towers. The complex combines residential and administrative spaces in a compact, defensible layout.
The castle was built in 1577 on the site of an earlier fortified structure from 1310. It arose after a fire destroyed the neighboring Soleuvre Castle in 1552, which prompted the need for a new residence.
The castle displays Renaissance features with symmetrical layouts, rectangular cross-frame windows, and balanced proportions visible throughout. This architectural language reflected how wealthy rulers expressed their authority through refined building design.
The site operates today as an educational center and is visited by groups throughout the year. It helps to explore the area in advance or check local information, as access to certain areas may be limited.
Anna von Insenburg commissioned the building as her personal residence to manage her territories after losing Soleuvre. This made her a notably independent ruler in a period when such decisions were typically reserved for male leaders.
