Grund, Historical district in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
Grund is a district of Luxembourg City set deep in a valley along the Alzette River, lined with stone buildings, narrow lanes, and sections of old fortification walls. The river runs close to the house fronts, and the surrounding cliffs rise sharply on both sides, giving the area a sheltered, sunken feel.
The area developed during the medieval period as a working district of tanners, millers, and merchants who relied on the river. Later expansions of the city's fortifications gradually shaped the edges of the valley and left behind the walls still visible today.
The Neumünster Abbey now serves as a cultural center hosting concerts and exhibitions open to the general public. Posters and banners outside give a sense of the program, which brings together local and international artists throughout the year.
Public elevators link the upper city to Grund and make it easy to avoid the steep descent on foot. Those who walk down should be prepared for stairs and uneven cobblestone surfaces, as the terrain throughout the area slopes sharply.
Although Grund is known today for its restaurants and bars, the riverbanks once held several water mills powered by the Alzette. Some buildings along the water still rest on the old stone foundations of those mills.
