Luxembourg City History Museum, Municipal heritage museum in Old Town, Luxembourg.
The Luxembourg City History Museum sits beneath the historic Old Town and spreads across three underground levels with original objects from different periods. The exhibition spaces show how the city developed and changed over time through items that belonged to its residents.
The museum opened in 1996 to tell the story of the city from its start as a fortress in the 10th century to today. It documents how this place evolved from a military stronghold to a commercial hub and eventually to a center for international business.
The museum reveals how the city was shaped by different peoples and cultures over time, and how residents adapted to changing periods. Crafts, trade, and daily habits are visible through objects that show what mattered to people living here.
The entrance is found on a street in the center of the Old Town, and the building takes visitors downward into the underground exhibition levels. Visitors should expect stairs or an elevator to move between different sections.
A panoramic window in the elevator lets visitors see the historical walls and structures of the city while descending to the exhibition levels. This connection between the modern visit and the visible remains of the past creates an unusual perspective.
