Corniche

The Corniche in Luxembourg is an elevated walkway that runs from the Bock Promontory to the Holy Ghost Citadel. The path offers continuous views over the Alzette Valley and the Grund district situated below.

Spanish and French forces built the fortifications of the Corniche during the 17th century as part of Luxembourg City's defensive system. These defensive works shaped the upper town's layout for centuries to come.

The Corniche serves as a natural viewpoint where artists and photographers have gathered for generations to capture the changing light over the valley below. Visitors notice how the elevated walkway frames the old town and its surroundings in a way that ground-level streets simply cannot offer.

The walkway is accessible daily with multiple entry points from the upper old town, so you can start your stroll from various locations. Comfortable shoes are advisable since the route has gentle slopes and some uneven sections.

Before 1870, steep sections featured staircases that were later leveled after the fortress was dismantled. This change reveals how the route was transformed from a genuine military passage into a visitor walkway.
