Chemin de la Corniche, Elevated promenade in Ville-Haute, Luxembourg
Chemin de la Corniche is an elevated walkway that runs along the ramparts of Luxembourg City, offering views across the Alzette Valley and the Grund neighborhood below. The path stretches between several access points, including the Bock Promontory and the Holy Ghost Citadel.
Spanish and French forces built these defensive walls in the 17th century as a fortified passage above the Alzette River. In 1870, defensive loopholes were removed from the original ramparts, gradually transforming the military structure into a public space.
This walkway shows how different periods of Luxembourg's architecture sit side by side, from medieval fortifications to modern buildings in the upper town. As you stroll along, the changes in building styles reveal how the city grew and adapted over time.
You can enter from several points, including the Bock Promontory and the Holy Ghost Citadel with different access spots along the route. The best time to visit is during daylight hours when views are clear and benches offer places to rest.
The walkway gets its name from the corniche, the curved route built along the rock face, which you can still see today in its winding path. This sweeping curve makes the stroll a visual journey that follows the natural lay of the land.
