Citadelle du Saint-Esprit, Medieval fortification in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
The Citadelle du Saint-Esprit stands on a plateau with stone walls and defensive structures overlooking the Alzette River in Luxembourg City.
Built in 1234 as a Holy Ghost Monastery, the fortification was transformed between 1685 and 1687 under French fortress builder Vauban's guidance.
The former military stronghold now functions as Luxembourg's judicial center, known as Cité judiciaire, representing the evolution of the site's purpose.
Located at 5 Rue du St Esprit in Ville-Haute, the citadel remains accessible 24 hours daily for visitors to explore its grounds.
The fortification incorporates three distinct rings of defense, connecting the elevated plateau to Luxembourg City's protected urban center.
