Riga Autobus Factory, Vehicle manufacturing facility in Riga, Latvia
Riga Autobus Factory was a vehicle manufacturer that produced minibuses and vans under the Latvija brand across multiple decades. The facility specialized in making ambulances, postal vehicles, and passenger transport, serving needs throughout the Soviet Union and beyond.
The factory started production in 1949 in Riga and later expanded to Jelgava. Operations ended when the company declared bankruptcy in 1998.
The factory established itself as one of only two major van manufacturers in the Soviet Union, alongside the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant.
The facility employed thousands of workers during its years of operation and was a major employer in the region. The site and surrounding area offer insight into the industrial history of Soviet-era manufacturing.
The RAF-977V model displayed the name Latvija in Latin letters, making it the only minibus from the socialist automotive industry to represent the region internationally. This made it a rare symbol of its production era.
