Teiča bogs, Nature reserve in Madona region, Latvia.
Teiča is a nature reserve in the Madona region covering over 19,700 hectares of wetland and containing 19 lakes. The area is dominated by bog landscape, with Kurtava Lake being the largest water body at around 74 hectares.
The bog formed around 9,000 years ago in a shallow depression left by glacial activity. About 7,500 years later, the lakes began to become overgrown by vegetation.
The site hosts over 900 plant species, 300 butterfly species, and 40 mammal species living together in this wetland. This diverse wildlife makes the place an important home for many rare and threatened animals.
Visiting the reserve requires accompaniment by Nature Conservation Agency staff and is only possible from June to October. Guests should prepare for boggy terrain and wear waterproof boots.
The peat layer reaches depths of around 9.5 meters, showing how slowly this landscape developed over thousands of years. This deep peat profile makes the area a valuable record of the region's climate history.
