Medema Purvs, Protected marsh in Mārupe Region, Latvia
Medema Purvs is a protected wetland in Mārupe Region that spreads over several thousand hectares between two towns. The terrain contains different types of sphagnum moss, carnivorous plants, and other vegetation adapted to boggy conditions.
Peat extraction was a major activity here during the middle of the 20th century, reshaping parts of the wetland. This industrial work left marks on the landscape that visitors can still observe today.
Walking paths follow old narrow-gauge railway tracks that once carried peat across the wetland. These routes now guide visitors through the landscape in a way that shows how people once used this place.
A newly built trail of roughly one and a half kilometers runs through the wetland with bridges and information panels at regular spots. Sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after rain, to stay comfortable and safe on the wet ground.
A rare parasitic fungus grows in this marsh that was previously known from only one other location in Latvia. This discovery has made the place noteworthy for researchers studying fungal diversity.
