Esseni mõis is a manor house located at the northern end of Dzirciema street in Riga's Spilve district, displaying traditional Baltic architectural features from the 1700s. The building consists of multiple rooms set within grounds that once included gardens, though the structure has deteriorated significantly over time.
The property came into the hands of town council member Kaspars Drelings in 1615 and later transferred to the Gotans family before being purchased by Imanuel Justus Esen in 1774. Under the Esen family, the estate became a center for collecting significant European manuscripts and literary works.
During the late 1700s, this manor became known for housing one of the region's most significant private libraries, collecting works by prominent European philosophers and thinkers. The space reflected the intellectual interests of the educated class in the Baltic territories of that era.
The manor is not currently accessible to visitors, as the building has fallen into substantial disrepair and the surrounding grounds have become overgrown. It is best to observe the site from the street and appreciate its historical significance from a distance.
The Prussian scholar Johann Bernoulli visited the manor between 1777 and 1778 and documented its exceptional collection, which included rare and banned publications from various European countries. His account of the visit is often overlooked, yet it preserves important details about intellectual activity in the region during that period.
