Uan Muhuggiag, Archaeological site in Ghat District, Libya.

Uan Muhuggiag is a rock shelter in the Sahara of southwestern Libya, located at roughly 3000 feet above sea level near the Wadi Teshuinat. The site contains painted rock walls and archaeological remains that reveal information about ancient habitation in this desert region.

Archaeological excavations in the 1950s uncovered mortal remains at this location dating back thousands of years. These discoveries marked an important moment in understanding early human settlement across the Sahara.

The rock shelter walls display over one hundred painted figures from ancient times, showing herders with their cattle and reflecting the daily life of pastoral communities in this region. These depictions offer a window into how people here lived with their animals.

Access to this location is challenging due to its remote desert setting and requires careful planning. The archaeological finds discovered here are now displayed in a museum in Tripoli for easier viewing.

The remains found at this location show preservation techniques that predate the more famous Egyptian methods by roughly 1000 years. They were treated with natural substances to protect them across the millennia.
