Tadrart Acacus, Mountain range and archaeological site in Ghat District, Libya.

The Acacus Mountains form a basaltic range extending 100 kilometers north from the Algerian border through the western Libyan desert, reaching heights of 1506 meters.

The mountains contain rock art dating from 12,000 BCE to 100 CE, documenting the progression from hunter-gatherer societies to settlements during changing climate conditions.

The rock paintings display detailed scenes of daily activities, including music, dancing, and hunting, along with depictions of elephants, giraffes, and other wildlife.

Access to the mountains requires four-wheel drive vehicles from the city of Ghat, with local guides necessary to navigate the remote desert terrain.

Natural water sources, including Bir Aminaner and Bir Sughd wells, provide essential hydration points throughout this section of the Sahara desert.
