Adrar Bous, Archaeological site and mountain formation in Iférouane, Niger.

Adrar Bous is an archaeological site and mountain formation in the Aïr region that rises approximately 1,123 meters high. The granite structures form a distinctive elevation at the edge of the Ténéré Desert and contain several layers of remains from different time periods.

The site shows traces of human settlement from the Late Stone Age through the Neolithic period, spanning thousands of years of habitation. This long occupation documents how people adapted to changing conditions in this region.

The ancient people who lived here left behind stone tools and pottery pieces that reveal how they raised animals and adapted to their surroundings. These objects tell stories about daily work and the relationship between people and the land.

Reaching this remote site requires specialized desert vehicles and experienced guides who know the terrain well. Daytime heat and nighttime cold demand careful preparation and appropriate gear for your stay.

Archaeological work uncovered four burial sites containing shell jewelry and other ornaments placed with the deceased. One of these burials showed evidence of a rare medical condition, revealing how communities cared for people with health challenges.
