Assekrem

Assekrem is a plateau located within Ahaggar National Park that rises to about 2,700 meters and features volcanic formations and basalt structures. The terrain is dominated by dark rock surfaces that shape the rugged appearance of this mountain region.

A French missionary established a stone hermitage on the plateau in 1910 and dedicated himself to linguistic work there. This location became a starting point for religiously oriented activities that continue to this day.

The name refers to the summit itself and holds importance for the Tuareg people as a landmark within their ancestral territory. Local communities have used these heights for generations as a gathering point and reference in the desert landscape.

Visitors should bring both warm and cold weather clothing, as temperatures shift significantly between day and night. The elevation also requires adequate time for acclimatization and proper gear suitable for mountain conditions.

A monastery stands at this location and continues to be inhabited by monks who carry on the legacy of its founder. The monastic community also provides shelter for pilgrims and visitors who reach this remote site.
