Gaberoun, Salt lake oasis in Wadi al Hayaa District, Libya.
Gaberoun is a salt lake in the Sahara Desert surrounded by tall sand dunes with scattered palm trees along its northern shore. The body of water spans a considerable area, forming a distinct oasis within the arid landscape.
A small settlement beside the lake was inhabited until the 1980s, when residents relocated to concrete buildings in the Wadi Bashir settlement. This relocation marked the end of a long period of permanent habitation at this location.
Tuareg traders maintain a small souvenir shop at the northeastern edge, where visitors can see how desert merchants continue age-old trading practices and connect with local craftwork.
Reaching the lake requires a four-wheel drive vehicle to navigate about 36 kilometers of sand from the Sabha-Ubari road. Travel through the sand desert should be planned with an experienced driver and adequate supplies.
The water holds a high salt concentration with tiny crustaceans, creating distinctive swimming conditions. This composition makes the lake notably different from ordinary freshwater lakes.
