Tengerzan lake, Oase im Sabha-Distrikt in der Fezzan-Region in Libyen
Tengerzan Lake is a salt lake in Wadi al Hayaa with water that has very high salt levels, much more concentrated than seawater. The lake sits surrounded by sand dunes of the Sahara Desert in one of Libya's driest regions.
Thousands of years ago this region was a wetter landscape with several freshwater lakes and human settlements from the Pleistocene and Holocene periods. Climate change led to drying of the land, but this body of water remained.
The Tuareg people have long used this place and gather small red crustaceans from the water for their traditional dishes. This practice is deeply rooted in their daily life and shows how they have adapted to this landscape.
The lake sits about 150 kilometers west of Sabha along the Sabha-Ubari road, then requires another 36 kilometers through sandy terrain. The best time to visit is during the cooler months, as summer temperatures in the Sahara are extremely high.
The lake's water is fed by underground springs, allowing this place to exist in one of the driest areas of the world. This hidden water supply has made this area livable for people over thousands of years.
