Strait of Gibraltar crossing, Proposed railway tunnel between Spain and Morocco.
The Strait of Gibraltar crossing project is a proposed railway tunnel between Spain and Morocco consisting of a system about 39 kilometers long beneath the Mediterranean Sea. The design includes two separate single-track tunnels and a service tunnel to enable rail transport between the two countries.
The first idea to connect Europe and Africa through infrastructure emerged in the 1850s during the height of railway expansion. Since then multiple feasibility studies have been conducted to evaluate the technical and economic challenges of such a connection.
The project symbolizes a physical link between European and African populations across the Strait of Gibraltar. It would simplify trade exchange between the two continents and create new pathways for people who travel daily between Spain and Morocco.
The crossing location sits within one of the world's busiest sea channels with strong currents and heavy ship traffic, which complicates construction planning. Visitors should know this remains a concept not currently accessible and can only be viewed from a distance or studied through project documentation.
The tunnel would need to bore through rock formations that are particularly hard in this region and withstand earthquake activity, as the area is seismically active. At its deepest point water above the tunnel would reach about 900 meters deep, making this one of the most technically demanding infrastructure solutions ever attempted.
