Bou Regreg, River in western Morocco
The Bou Regreg is a river in western Morocco that originates in the Middle Atlas Mountains and flows for several hundred kilometers across the country before reaching the Atlantic Ocean between Rabat and Sale. Its estuary extends far inland, creating a natural divide between these two cities.
The ancient town of Sala Colonia once stood on the banks of the Bou Regreg and served as an important trading port for Phoenicians and Carthaginians. Later, the region became the center of an autonomous community that established its own maritime republic in the 17th century.
The Bou Regreg region was home to Moriscos from Spain in the 17th century, who established their own community with a distinct governance system. Their presence shaped the local identity and left marks on the architecture and traditions of the cities along its banks.
The river banks are accessible at many points, especially in the urban areas of Rabat and Sale where maintained paths and viewpoints exist. The best time to visit is in autumn or spring when the weather is pleasant and water levels are more stable.
The river estuary serves as a crucial stopover for migratory birds traveling between Africa and Europe, particularly during seasonal transitions. Birdwatchers can observe rare species here that are difficult to spot elsewhere.
