Southern Provinces, Geographic region in Western Sahara, North Africa.
The Southern Provinces stretch across 252,120 square kilometers of desert terrain between Morocco and Mauritania, featuring coastal areas along the Atlantic Ocean.
Spain controlled this territory from 1884 to 1975, establishing treaties and maintaining administrative control until Morocco initiated territorial claims through the Green March.
The population includes both Sahrawi inhabitants who speak Hassaniya Arabic and maintain Bedouin traditions, along with settlers from different regions of Morocco.
The territory contains substantial phosphate deposits near Bu Craa, southeast of Laayoune, while coastal areas support commercial fishing activities.
The region remains divided, with Morocco administering two-thirds of the territory while the Polisario Front controls the eastern third as the Free Zone.
