Cèdre Gouraud, Historic cedar tree in Azrou, Morocco
The cedar tree stands in a clearing along the path connecting Azrou to Ifrane through Tizi-n-Tretten, measuring 7.45 meters in circumference without bark.
Named after French General Henri Gouraud in 1917, the tree became a symbol of the Atlas Mountains following a photograph taken during his visit.
The cedar forest surrounding the tree hosts Barbary macaques and serves as a natural barrier between the Sahara Desert and Europe.
The site remains accessible year-round and features local vendors selling treats for the monkeys and offering horse riding activities.
Although the original cedar died in 2003, a new specimen located 100 meters away has been designated as the successor, reaching 40 meters in height.
