Jbel El Koudiate, Shield volcano in Ifrane Province, Morocco
Jbel El Koudiate is a shield volcano in the Middle Atlas mountains composed of basalt with broad, gently sloping sides. Its wide formation structure makes it appear as a low dome when viewed from surrounding areas.
The formation took shape during the late Pliocene period when successive basalt lava flows cooled and solidified across the landscape. This volcanic activity created the distinctive dome-like profile visible today.
The mountain serves as a natural landmark in a region where Berber communities maintain traditional ways of life on the surrounding slopes. The terraced fields and settlements visible on its sides show how people have lived and worked with this landscape over time.
The mountain can be approached via marked trails that start west of Ifrane, with the eastern slope being most accessible. The terrain is easier to navigate during warmer months when paths are dry and visibility is good.
This volcano is part of a trio of major volcanic structures in the Azrou region, sharing its geological story with Jbel Tamarrakoit and Jbel Outgui. Together they offer insight into the intense volcanic history that shaped the Middle Atlas.
