Kasbah of Amergou

The Kasbah of Amergou is a medieval fortress perched on Mount Imergou in the Moulay Bouchta area. The structure sits at an elevation of about 640 meters and commands the Ouergha plains below with defensive towers positioned at its corners.

The fortress was built between the 11th and 12th centuries by the Almoravid dynasty as a military stronghold against local tribes. It later played a role in conflicts between competing regional powers during the medieval period.

The structure blends traditional Moroccan building methods with local materials that people shaped by hand. The stone and brick walls show how residents combined practical defense with artistic craftsmanship.

The location is reachable by car via the N8 road south of Taounate, then heading west on the R408 toward the Moulay Bouchta area. Parking is available at the base of the mountain, from where visitors can walk up to reach the structure.

The site was one of the last places where Almoravid fighters sheltered during their struggles with rival dynasties in the 13th century. This historical detail reveals how important the fortress served as a refuge during turbulent times.
