Ledo Road is a highway stretching roughly 1,000 kilometers through Kachin State, linking India to China across dense forests and mountainous terrain. Today, portions of the route remain closed or restricted to general traffic, making travel along it challenging and unpredictable.
The road was built during World War II to transport military supplies to Allied forces stationed in China. Thousands of local workers undertook this massive construction effort across challenging terrain.
Multiple ethnic groups from Kachin State maintain settlements along the road, preserving their traditions and ways of life through generations.
Many sections are currently closed to visitors or require special permits to access. It is wise to research current conditions and make arrangements well before attempting to travel any portion of the route.
The construction required building roughly 226 bridges across rivers and valleys during wartime conditions. This engineering achievement made passage through the heavily forested region possible at all.
