Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Bridge, Road bridge in Assam, India
The Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Bridge crosses the Brahmaputra River over a length of 9.15 kilometers, supported by 183 spans with a width of 12.9 meters. The roadway runs in a straight line over the water, linking both banks with a continuous concrete structure.
Construction work began in November 2011 and lasted over five years before Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the crossing on May 26, 2017. Completion marked the end of decades of ferry services as the only link across the Brahmaputra in this area.
The structure honors Bhupen Hazarika, a composer and filmmaker from Assam whose work shaped the cultural life of the region. His name remains closely tied to the identity of the northeast and is remembered with respect by local communities.
Crossing takes about ten to fifteen minutes and cuts travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to around four hours. The roadway is open to all vehicle types and offers a wide view over the river in clear weather.
The structure is the longest road crossing in the country, exceeding the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai by 3.55 kilometers. The span allows a safe crossing over the Brahmaputra during monsoon season when the river swells considerably.
