Gandantegchinlen Monastery, Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

The main temple of Gandantegchinlen contains a 26.5-meter high bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara decorated with precious stones and traditional ornaments.

Founded in 1838, the monastery became the sole functioning Buddhist institution during the Soviet period when religious practices faced strict restrictions.

The monastery maintains a collection of 70,000 Buddhist manuscripts and prints in Mongolian, Tibetan, and Sanskrit languages, preserving ancient religious texts.

The monastery complex opens daily to visitors, offering guided tours while maintaining active religious services performed by more than 100 resident monks.

Monks continue to live in traditional yurts within the monastery grounds, maintaining historical living arrangements despite the modern urban development of Ulaanbaatar.
