Дулмалин, Buddhist monastery in Bayanzurkh district, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Dulmaling is a Buddhist monastery in Ulaanbaatar with residential quarters for female monks, meditation halls, and a stupa consecrated by Choden Rinpoche in 2004. The compound currently houses a small community of nuns who teach and train there.
The monastery was founded in the 18th century as a gift from the Manchu emperor near Urga, but suffered severe destruction during the 1930s repression. Restoration and reopening under modern management marked a new beginning for the site.
The monastery serves as a place where young Mongolian nuns carry out daily practice and study traditional Buddhist teachings. Visitors can observe how the community gathers for meditation and religious ceremonies together.
Access to the monastery is possible during times when ceremonies take place or when residents are present. It is respectful to inquire ahead and follow the rules of the place so as not to disturb those practicing.
The monastery has been supported by the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition since 2001 and benefits from instruction by two experienced nuns from Sera Je. This international exchange connects Mongolian practice with Tibetan teaching methods.
