Malta International Airport, Aviation hub in Santa Luċija, Malta.
Malta International Airport is the main airport serving the island, handling both passenger and cargo flights with connections to destinations across Europe and beyond. The terminal includes modern facilities such as check-in counters, security screening areas, departure and arrival halls, and shopping and dining zones for travelers.
The site was built as a British military base during World War II and later converted for civilian use. Commercial passenger traffic began in the late 1950s when Malta developed its own aviation infrastructure for tourism.
The name comes from the nearby town of Luqa, where British military pilots were once stationed. Today the site serves as the gateway for millions of visitors arriving on the island each year, forming their first impressions of Malta here.
The airport sits southeast of Valletta and is well connected by several roads. Travelers should expect shorter security lines outside the summer months, while peak season can bring longer processing times.
The airport grounds contain remnants of old hangars and wartime structures that are still partly visible. Visitors sometimes notice the runway's unusual proximity to the coast, where aircraft glide directly over the sea on final approach.
