Abbatija Tad-Dejr, Early Christian hypogeum in Rabat, Malta
Abbatija Tad-Dejr is an early Christian hypogeum consisting of four underground burial chambers carved into the rock with decorated tomb structures arranged in organized patterns. The complex makes use of a former quarry and displays careful planning in how the burials were positioned.
The site developed gradually from the fourth to ninth century as a burial place for Christian communities. Archaeological excavations between 1926 and 1933 revealed how the chambers were used and modified across different periods.
The main chamber holds a medieval chapel where visitors can see faded frescoes showing religious figures and scenes from Christian tradition.
Access to the underground chambers requires advance booking through Heritage Malta, as visits are only available with a guide. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for narrow, dimly lit passages.
The walls display eight painted red crosses that combine both Greek and Latin styles, showing how different Christian traditions merged in this space. These marks reveal the religious diversity of the communities who used this burial ground.
