Church of St Francis of Assisi, Ħamrun, Catholic church in Ħamrun, Malta.
The Church of St Francis of Assisi is a church building in Ħamrun with a central nave measuring 17 meters wide, constructed from limestone and capable of holding around 2000 worshippers. The structure connects directly to an adjacent Franciscan convent and includes a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help for additional prayer spaces.
Construction of this church began in April 1952, replacing a temporary chapel housed in a converted garage that had served the local Catholic community since 1947. The bell tower was crowned with a statue of St Francis sculpted by Marco Montebello, installed in February 1960.
The interior features marble statues by artist Wistin Camilleri, notably the main sculpture of St Francis receiving the stigmata at the central altar. These artworks shape the character of the prayer space and reflect local devotion to the saint.
The building is directly accessible from the adjacent street and its limestone exterior is visible from a distance, making it easy to locate. It is advisable to visit during regular prayer times when the interior is fully open, and comfortable shoes are recommended for an enjoyable visit.
The bell tower features a prominent statue of St Francis designed by sculptor Marco Montebello that stands above the roofline. This figure on the tower becomes a recognizable landmark visible from many parts of the town.
