Niamey Grand Market, Covered market in central Niamey, Niger.
Niamey Grand Market is a covered marketplace in the city center with roughly 4000 shops organized in different sections. The structure includes metal stalls, covered tables, and two large permanent buildings for retail stores.
After a major fire in 1982, the marketplace was completely rebuilt and reopened in 1987. This reconstruction was a significant undertaking that reshaped the trading infrastructure of the city.
Local traders sell traditional Nigerien textiles, spices, and crafts that reflect regional commercial practices. You can watch how merchants arrange their goods and observe the daily routines of buyers moving through the aisles.
The marketplace has a central bus station and taxi terminal behind the main building, making it easy to reach from anywhere in the city. The different sections are clearly laid out, so you can easily navigate between textile vendors, metal stalls, and other goods.
The site was designed by architect Kalt Pouradier-Duteil Vignal and replaced a former park that once separated European and African sections of the city. This transformation reflects how the city changed after independence and the role commerce played in reshaping public space.
