Kouré Reserve

Kouré Reserve is a protected area east of Niamey, covering around 93,480 hectares of savanna landscape. West African giraffes move freely here between scattered trees and vegetation.

In the early 1980s, giraffe populations dropped sharply, leading to the founding of the Association to Safeguard Giraffes in Niger. This organization launched protection measures to prevent the species from disappearing.

Local people here work alongside conservation efforts and receive support like grain mills and fertilizer. This practical help allows communities to meet their farming needs while giraffes live in their surroundings.

Visitors should arrange a local guide who knows where the giraffes move and provides specialized vehicles for watching them. The best time to visit is during drier months when the animals are easier to find.

This reserve holds the last remaining West African giraffes living in their natural habitat across the continent. Saving this population from extinction stands as an example of successful wildlife protection work in the region.
