Palais du Zarmakoye, Royal residence in Dosso, Niger
Palais du Zarmakoye is a royal residence in Dosso positioned in the city center opposite a grand mosque. The compound contains multiple buildings and courtyards surrounded by tall protective walls throughout the grounds.
Construction began in 1904 under Zarmakoye Aouta, an influential Zarma leader who rose to a status equal to the chief of Maradi. This founding marked the rise of the Zarma family to political prominence in the region.
The palace remains the center of Zarma community life, and its layout reflects social customs through separate spaces for different groups. The architecture and arrangement of rooms speak to the traditions that shape how people move and gather here.
Visits work best during cooler times of day, as the sun is intense here and courtyards offer little shade. It is wise to contact local authorities ahead of time to arrange access and understand the protocols expected.
The grounds serve as the final resting place for all deceased Zarmakoye rulers since the palace was built. These burial sites connect current inhabitants directly to generations of leaders who lived and governed here.
