Ile Ife

Ile Ife is a city in southwestern Nigeria located in Osun State, positioned at the intersection of roads from Ibadan, Ilesha, and Ondo. The city houses the Natural History Museum and Obafemi Awolowo University, serving as a major educational and administrative center for the region.

The city emerged as an artistic center between 700 and 900 AD, with its artisans creating exceptional bronze, stone, and terracotta sculptures by the 12th century. This artistic tradition established the city as a cultural model throughout West Africa.

The Ooni, residing in the central palace, serves as the spiritual leader of the Yoruba people and maintains the sacred staff of Oranmiyan. This role shapes daily life in the city and its spiritual significance for believers throughout the region.
