Asejire Reservoir, lake in Nigeria
Asejire Reservoir is a man-made lake in southwestern Nigeria, located about 30 kilometers east of Ibadan on the Osun River. The water body has a Y-shaped form with several inlets, surrounded by planted vegetation along the banks that helps prevent erosion and keeps the water relatively clean throughout most of the year.
The reservoir was constructed in the late 1960s to store water for surrounding communities and help manage river flow. In recent years, government efforts alongside international support have focused on renovating and strengthening the dam to ensure reliable water supply for the region.
The reservoir plays a central role in local livelihoods, with fishing communities relying on its waters for food and income. Fishermen use traditional nets and gather here regularly, reflecting how deeply this place is woven into daily routines and family traditions.
The best time to visit is during the rainy season from May to October when water levels are higher and the landscape is greener. Access from Ibadan is straightforward, and the location offers a peaceful environment to explore at a relaxed pace with calm water and few crowds on most days.
The water naturally contains low levels of rare earth elements from rock weathering, but some concentrations exceed safe drinking water standards. This reveals that while the reservoir remains largely clean, it requires ongoing monitoring and treatment to prevent potential health risks from long-term exposure.
