Asejire Reservoir, lake in Nigeria
Asejire Reservoir is a man-made lake on the Osun River in Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria. It has a branching shape with several arms extending inland, and its banks are lined with planted vegetation that helps hold the soil and keep the water in good condition year-round.
The reservoir was built in the late 1960s to store water for nearby communities and regulate the flow of the Osun River. More recently, work has been carried out to reinforce the dam and ensure the water supply remains dependable for the surrounding area.
The reservoir plays a central role in local livelihoods, with fishing communities relying on its waters for food and income. Fishermen use traditional nets and gather here regularly, reflecting how deeply this place is woven into daily routines and family traditions.
A visit during the rainy season, from May to October, gives a fuller sense of the place as water levels are higher and the banks look greener. Getting there from Ibadan is straightforward, and wearing sturdy footwear is a good idea as the paths along the water can be uneven.
The water naturally contains low levels of rare earth elements that come from the weathering of surrounding rocks. Some of these concentrations go above safe drinking water thresholds, which is why treatment is needed before the water reaches households.
