Etche, Local government area in Rivers State, Nigeria.
Etche is a local government area in Rivers State with its administrative headquarters located in Okehi, covering 32 communities organized across 5 clans. The region spans several settlements that are shaped by their farming activities and traditional governance structures.
The area came into being when the former Ikwerre/Etche administrative region was divided, creating a separate governance structure with Okehi as its center. This administrative change allowed better management of local affairs for residents.
The communities speak the Etche dialect of Igbo language and keep farming traditions alive by growing cassava, plantains, bananas, and yams. These practices shape daily life and connect people to their roots.
The local government secretariat is open from Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM, handling resident affairs and services. Visitors should prepare for tropical weather and variable road conditions, especially during the rainy season.
The region contains over 250 active oil wells that began operations in 1958, fundamentally shifting the economy from farming to resource extraction. This industry continues to shape the local infrastructure and economic life alongside traditional agriculture.
