Nigerian Defence Academy, Military university in Kaduna, Nigeria
The Nigerian Defence Academy is a military institution in Kaduna, Nigeria, that prepares future officers for the army, navy, and air force. The program combines university courses in sciences and humanities with practical military instruction and runs for five years until graduation with an academic degree and the rank of lieutenant.
The institution opened in 1964 and evolved from the Royal Military Forces Training College founded during the colonial era. Indian Army officers led the first courses and shaped training standards during the early years of the academy.
The academy holds university status with academic degrees awarded alongside officer rank, so cadets earn both civilian and military credentials. Uniformed students from all parts of the country live and study together on the grounds, forming a cross-regional community through shared training.
Access to the grounds is restricted for visitors, as the site functions as an active military installation with security checks in place. Those interested can inquire through official channels in advance if special events or open days are scheduled.
Since 2011, female cadets have been admitted, which was a far-reaching change in military education across the country at the time. The first women officer candidates completed the entire program under the same conditions as their male peers and received their lieutenant commissions after five years.
