History
Colonial administrators founded the settlement in 1900 and made it the capital of the northern administrative region in 1917. This role continued until the area was divided into separate states in 1967.
Culture
The city takes its name from the Hausa word for crocodiles that once lived in the river. The National Museum displays archaeological finds and ethnographic collections from different cultures of Northern Nigeria, giving visitors insight into regional diversity.
